This is a project that could be permanent or just used for a short period of time, or a night.
I had a jacket that I bought few years back but when I got it, it was too small. I could still get it on, but it was tight and uncomfortable. It was used only a few times and then I got another larger jacket. Recently I was going to throw this small jacket away when I came up with an idea to keep the jacket.
Â
fThis new idea consisted of cutting off a zipper with some material, say about 4 inches/10mm or so, from another top of the same colour. From “Both” sides. Then sewing them on to the jacket that was too small.
It occurred to me while doing this, that if a friend came to your home before an event, wanted to wear clothes of yours but the top was a tad too small, you could find a top that was the same colour that you were going to throw away, cut the zips off or buttons or whatever, and then sew them on to the smaller top – this friend could wear it for the night, and then you can cut the threads off and remove the zips and the top was back to how it was before.
If the sewing is done cleverly on an existing sewing line of the same thread colour and so forth, no one would know the difference I am guessing. Note: I have not tried that, its just an idea.
If you can imagine that Image A is a top that is the same colour of the top that is too small for you.
The two lines are where you will cut the zips/buttons and so on, off.
Image B is a picture of the two zips and extra material, after they were removed from the other top/vest etc.
Image C is the old zip being sewn on to the small top – in sewing the strips of material the top becomes wider – about a size or more bigger – it depends how much material you removed from the top that had the zips on.
I used two colours in the image to show you how it works, but in reality they would be the same colour and same material.
Image D shows the end product.
To further explain, the Image B section is as wide as you need to widen the small top.
Please note that in Image B before you sew these zips and material on to the jacket you can bend and iron the rough edge and sew a hem, tidy edge, and sew along that hem when attaching it to the jacket.
Now, if you just cleverly and carefully sewed the zips, buttons or whatever on to the small top/jacket/vest etc, using a simple straight stitch it can easily be removed afterwards if you wanted this addition to the small top only for a short while.
For me, this is a heated jacket that I use for Security Patrol, so I didn’t want to throw it away. I had to be careful not to sew on any of the heating wires.
What I did on my jacket, jsut to see how it works, was sew the additinal zipz on the heated jacket that was too sall for me, and I didn’t remove the heated jackets zips, they remain under the new section of material so cannot be seen.Â
But if I wanted the jacket as it used to be, I can just remove the new sections and because I never remvoed the old zips they can be used again. It all comes down to if you want this to be a permanent addition to your top or not. Its up to you. If this a permanent project then you can cut off the existing zips, buttons, or whatever, and then add the new sections with their zips.
I hope this was easy to understand.Â
My heated vest works perfectly and is very comfortable. Fits perfectly.
