I was watching some of Shindig, and the thought that came to my mind was that maybe all that 1950s rock scene with the teenagers was actually born from established religion which at that time hated Rock and Roll.

Many whites hated to admit that Rock came from the negro Soul Singers Gospel singing, that Soulful singing, the depth of the voices, the harmonies, it all was the beginning of rock and roll. It is also said that it came from sea shanties, and blues and jazz.

People say that they did something nonreligious like a sport, “religiously”, meaning with dedication, with effort, with enjoyment, much like the roots of Rock and Roll and I wondered just now if the reason why Rock and Roll was so popular was that the teenagers were bored with church services, but still wanted to dig something religiously, with passion, excitement, and so on – if that energy were put in to helping the poor, building homes, feeding people and so on, genuine loving charity work,. these young would have been busy and felt very good about themselves, respected themselves, been proud of themselves, but instead the churches just continued taking the parents money and continued with boring sermons.

So, desperate for a reason for being alive, wanting fun, excitement, they were thrust into Rock and Roll, which went on to be booze, drugs, casual sex, and so on. But in the beginning it seemed like an explosion of pure fun to the younger generations of the 50s and 60s.

Thus, did Rock & Roll become the teens new religion, and have they spent their lives adoring Rock music because they adhere to it in their lives “Religiously”.
