Hitler was sure he would beat the small country of England, as he has defeated many other countries.

Before the Battle of Britain (summer 1940), Germany had conquered or occupied a string of countries:

Before the war (annexed [to take control of a smaller piece of land or a country and add it to a larger country or city] or absorbed without fighting)

• Austria (March 1938): the Anschluss

• Czechoslovakia (1938-39): the Sudetenland was ceded at Munich in 1938, then the rest of the country was occupied in March 1939

Defeated in war (1939-1940)

• Poland (September 1939): invaded by Germany from the west, with the Soviet Union invading from the east about two weeks later. Poland was defeated within about five weeks.

• Denmark (April 1940): fell in a matter of hours.

• Norway (April-June 1940): the fighting lasted about two months, with British and French forces helping the Norwegians before withdrawing.

• Netherlands (May 1940): surrendered after about five days, following the bombing of Rotterdam.

• Belgium (May 1940): surrendered after about 18 days.

• Luxembourg (May 1940): occupied almost immediately.

• France (May-June 1940): defeated in about six weeks, and an armistice was signed on June 22, 1940. Britain and France had been the main Allied powers, so this left Britain standing alone in Western Europe.

Britain’s expeditionary force was evacuated from Dunkirk at the end of May and beginning of June 1940, but it left most of its heavy equipment behind.
Germany never actually invaded Britain. The planned invasion, Operation Sea Lion, was shelved after the Luftwaffe failed to win air superiority in the Battle of Britain. The Blitz bombing campaign then continued into 1941.
Germany’s later conquests, including Yugoslavia, Greece, and much of the Soviet Union, came after this period.

Hitler’s success was huge, thus to him beating down a small enemy like England was easy. But England had friends, they also were fierce believers in good, and the whole country gathered as one against the evil threat of the Nazi’s and refusing to budge, willing to die in the good fight, women, men, even children, refused to give and become slaves to the evil empire or to become believers of the Nazi regime.

Hitler lost because the people were like Martin Luther when he faced the Pope and certain death unless re recanted his words, refused to do as the Pope demands, and Luther was sure he was about to die, but God was against the Pope and for Luther, an unknown small time Priest who had not given in to evil as the Pope of that time had.
