Many adults abuse themselves verbally or physically, like a palm slap to the head with the words, “Oh you idiot!” because they have been taught this as a child as a response to he or she making a mistake.
There was a fictional example (I don’t recall where it came from) of a man watching a play in the audience in the front seats, and at a point in the play he says something. The lead actor responds by leaving the stage and slapping that man hard on the face.
Shocked the man sits quietly.
The play restarts and uncontrollably the man in the audience says something again, and the actor comes back down and slaps his face again.
This is repeated one more time.
But this third time the audience man realizes what is going to happen and that this is going to hurt so he holds up his hand and stops the actor from coming off the stage and instead slaps his own face. And if it happens again he continues to slap his own face.
The theory is that when we are small and we are told many times through the years that we are a fool, stupid, dumb, or we are actually slapped across the head, etc, then as an adult we subconsciously continue this punishment on ourselves.
Do you, as an adult, call yourself stupid, an idiot, a fool and anything like that?
We live in a time where we are taught that our parents are wonderful people. And when they are bad parents or make toxic mistakes on us when we are children, we lie to ourselves about them or we try to ignore our parents failings, and mentally we stand up strong for our parents, even when they don’t really deserve it.
We can be shamed by family or other people for even suggesting that our parents were not the good parents the rest of the family seems to think that they were.
It is easy for the child to blame his or her self, than face the facts that the parent calling them names or hitting the child is actually the one to blame. Children tend to believe that the adult is wise, has common sense and knowledge, and they are told as children to always look up to their adults and parents and to trust them.
This mental lying to ourselves covers up the wrongs, failing, toxicity and mistakes of our parents and tells us that they can do no wrong – the problem with painting them so perfectly is that when what they did wrong to us continues subconsciously with us, we self blame, we curse ourselves (as our parents did), we blame ourselves (as our parents did), she shame, hit, and call ourselves names, (as our parents once did), but because we cover up for our parents toxic behaviours in our adult minds, we refuse to see that we were taught to think of ourselves as fools, idiots and stupid etc, rather than see that we are not these things at all.
No parents are innocent, perfect, the best, and so on, they are human, and they also would have had toxic parents if they too were toxic parents. This is not about blame, it is about seeing yourself as you truly are and stop self blaming and self punishing yourself when you make simple mistakes.
You see, if you make a mistake you can fix it and not make that mistake again or not so often. But if you think that you are an idiot, you just assume that you will never get such things right because to you, as you were taught to think as a child, that there is something wrong with you when there is not.
By putting the blame where it belongs, and accepting that you were (unintentionally) brainwashed over the years to self punish and self blame, you can now reprogram your mind to accepting the mistake, as a mistake, learning from mistakes (instead of punishing yourself) and then trying something else or getting someone’s opinion how to deal with such and such a situation. Or come up with something yourself, or more importantly come up with something nicer to say to yourself, something kind, encouraging, helpful, suggesting to yourself that you are doing all right and can deal with this challenge.
