Giving – Sermon

Today I would like to talk to you about giving.

If we turn to John 3:16 (Page 785) we read these words: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Christians were designed to give. Our whole outlook in life is designed on giving freely to others who are in need. Our example of giving is shown in our living. The Bible is a book about giving and as we read the Bible we will find many examples of giving. Just living the Christian life is not giving the way God wants us to give. God wants us to give with our hearts.

There are many examples in this modern world of taking. The woman’s lib movement is obviously designed for the individual, the husband and children are firmly put aside so that the career of the individual woman is satisfied. The sexual revolution of the sixties was obviously designed for the individual and an attempt to try to find some sort of personal pleasure in life. Many people are taught these days that life is about you and what you can make with your life, your personal success. Not about what you can do for others. Christians are living examples of giving.

There are many ways to give, some of them easy, some of them hard. It is unselfish to give. I want you to please consider the examples found in the Holy Bible about giving. I want you to consider what it means to give. On a persons birthday we give presents to the person who is having a birthday. When people come to our door we may give them money for a charity.

When we come to church we give some money when we tithe. But what about trying to give all the time. Can you give all day long?

One way we can show our good loving attitudes as Christians is for us to put aside our wants and do something for the community or for non-Christians. We need to be good examples of the Christian faith. God wants us to reach out into the community and show our love for all His children and the best way to do that is to be ever helpful.

Many modern day churches live within its own protective circle. They hide themselves away from the community and hope that people will come to their church. The best way for us to show that we are good Christians is for us to reach out to the community and show that we care. To do this we need to step out of our protective circle and do the good deeds that God intended us to do. God wants us, like Jesus, to help those who are needy, by doing this we show those who are needy that we Christians are leading the life that God intended of us to lead, the life of the giving.

What is the greatest joy of giving? The greatest joy of giving is the feeling we get when we see what we have done to help another person. Especially if that person desperately needs our help.

One of the joys of living is not to have any pain. So if you know somebody in pain help them.
