Desperate people will pay

Desperate people will pay exorbitant amounts of money to remain free, and they will do anything to stay free, especially if there is a chance of paying for their crimes.
This should always be kept in mind when one thinks that a situation is too ridiculous or too extreme.
Nothing is too extreme to the criminal’s trying to save their own selves from justice. Put yourselves in their shoes and the situation looks more viable.
