This is from a male point of view and what I have tried, but it can be in many ways applied to a woman’s life.
It is not age that slows us down, it is our attitude to age that slows us down and also our health choices that we make as we age.
Many people in their 30’s and 40’s upwards are warned to give up smoking, to stop being lazy, to trade TV for exercise and so on. Many ignore this advice to their peril. Ignoring good healthy advice can kill a person.
I have made some discoveries that may be helpful. I will share them on this page and hopefully they will help people age more gracefully and with better health.
For men, not sure about women, we stop producing various things that we produced when younger, one is NAD. If you get NMN-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, capsules or powder this can really help.
Some who take NMN in the morning use Resveratrol as well.
I was having serious pain issues getting up, my legs, knee’s and body in general was suffering when I tried to stand up, the struggle was real.
I read about NMN and saw some advertising about it, and how it helps replace NAD which the body stops making as we age. They claimed that a few months of taking NMN would make a big difference, and it did.
All the issues I had a year ago don’t exist. Having experienced this I suggest people at least give NMN a go for a few months.
I have read that NAD tablets etc are not as good as NMN, because the body changes the NMN in to NAD naturally, and that is the best way.
I advice movement. Even if it hurts, keep moving about. If something is on the floor, bend over, pick it up, do it again the next time. One of the issues with age is that people tend to get lazy because of pain. But if we stop doing certain movements we stop the exercise in those muscles and we lose them, and then we are really suffering, and in doing so we lose our flexibility.
You want muscle, and to keep muscle we must use them.
The body does not make Magnesium yet it is good for the muscles, and can prevent cramps.
You can get capsules and take them, but if you also take vitamins Magnesium tends to be in them, but in low amounts.
I have Magnesium in capsules and also in the morning in some vitamin capsules, and at night I take the Magnesium capsules to help prevent cramp in the night or especially in the morning when I stretch when I wake up.
If your knee’s hurt, exercise, walk, bend them, keep the leg and knee are muscles active, this helps to limit or even stop pain and the muscles do the work. Keep moving, keep walking, keep going.
Please don’t be ashamed to use a stick, walking stiff, staff, whatever, to walk with. People today recommend that young men and women use such items when out walking, because it helps with arm and leg strength and makes the going easier, especially if you have to go uphill, up steps and so on.
They are also excellent weapons if you are attacked by animals or people.
If you do a stick, staff, walking stick defensive course even the ones on the Internet, these courses will help limber you up, keep you moving, loose and active. This will affect the rest of your activities, and you will find that in the beginning it may be hard but as time goes on you will find a new freedom, and enjoyment in your life.
People have told me to act my age and to stop playing modern music when I go cycling. But I have discovered that new music and songs are fun as long as they are decent and have words easy to sing to, and some are just fast and exciting, and that makes them fun to cycle with.
My advice, is just because you are aging, it does not mean that you can stop listening to new songs and the old songs. age should not make you a snob.
Eat a lot of fruit and veggies, less red meats and fatty stuff. Teach yourself to eat more healthier, change bad foods for nuts, fruit and such.
You have nothing to prove, and your body is a temple to be honoured, respected and cared for, so please care for your body.
The healthier your body the healthier your mind
A good practice is going the long way, taking the longer route, because the more we walk the more we benefit from the effort and the extra steps we take.
The most beneficial action you can do is to keep doing the things that you have always done, even if you have slowed down, just do them anyway. And keep away from TV. Watch a movie, but TV can suck up huge amounts of time and minds. Hours and hours, many each day, week etc, sitting in a chair doing nothing, is so bad for your long-term health.
Each day in front of the TV loosens up the muscles and depletes them, and we lose our ability to move freely from many years sitting down. Not to mention the junk pumped in to your mind day after day in advertising or mindless TV shows. I gave up public TV around 1994, and from then to now I can buy a movie, or even watch a TV season, but in my time, when I put aside the time to do so, and I can still organise my day as I wish to without any TV interfering with my plans.
And most important of all I do not hear mindless endless advertising.
Jo is very good, and these stretches are good if you do them a few times each week. She talks a lot, so often I mute the volume and still follow her stretches.
