During the early 1990s I got into Martial Arts, particularly Karate, but I wanted to know what other martial arts were all about as well. So I did a lot of reading about old martial arts practices, their views of life, of self defence, and the long history of martial arts.
One of the discoveries I made around that time was that the dedicated martial artists of that time, and up to that time (not sure about the modern martial artists of today) had a special name for sugar, in particular white sugar.
They called white sugar “White Death”. The claim was that this sugar was very bad for the human body.
For a short while I made home brew beer, back before I started Martial Arts and was rather surprised at how much sugar was put in beer. It certainly seemed unhealthy.
I gave up alcohol back in 2004 and barely drank a decade before that, so my alcohol sugar intake was low.
As a single father in the 1990’s I did a lot of baking. I made jam and to my horror I discovered that we use a lot of white sugar in jams. I discovered later on that some other countries make jam naturally with no added sugar at all.
What did occur to me though, was that if we have so much sugar in the likes of jam’s, it must dull the taste of the actual contents of the jam itself – if it was strawberry jam people were tasting about the same amount of sugar as strawberries, thus dulling the taste but making it sweeter.
I was at this stage becoming very concerned at the large amounts of sugar that people consume, especially over their lifetime. So I decided that for me and the children I would halve the sugar in what I baked, or even add less than that.
Thus, we actually tasted what was in the cake more than the sweet taste of sugar.
My 2 daughters were 3 and 4 when I started all this baking so they thought that the low amount of sugar in cakes and biscuits was normal.
I remember offering a cake to a teenager back then and he thought that it was horrible because it was not sweet, his reaction surprised me, but also taught me that even though we, my children and I, enjoyed the baking with half the sugar of normal baking, that other people can become very used to consuming high amounts of sugar and thinking that this was normal and that the taste of sugar was now considered normal.
The cake was sweet, but not the sweet that he was used to.
If a recipe called for 1 cup of sugar I halved it to half a cup, or sometimes even less.
To the children and I it was fine.
Today I tend to have other sugars, not white sugar, and I always have little. But what I have noticed is that the high amounts of sugar in cakes or food, or candy bars etc make me feel very sick because my body reacts very negatively to so much concentrated sugar in a small item such as a Moro bar.
I also read decades ago that food companies add sugar in large amounts to basically anything that they can, to make what they decided were unpleasant tastes, what was really the natural tastes of food, to a sweeter taste.
The sweet sugary tastes are added to get people to buy their products on a regular bases, sugar is addictive, the billions of people worldwide that consume sugar daily is proof of that. Before this, we consumed far less sugar daily.
Reading these studies in the past and now on the likes of YouTube, the Internet, and about the history of food, how its made, advertising and how they groom us into their products, I realise that it was not wise to trust companies that sold products, food or otherwise, and to be more careful about what I eat and drink.
A lot of sugar, refined sugar, is known to cause depression, mood changes, and other health issues as well as long term health issues.
Being aware of this and that sugar is used to sell products, and being aware that refined sugar can cause depression and mood issues, it is wise to find alternative products and then take steps to consume less sugar by cutting down on the foods and drinks that have a high sugar content or like me with alcohol, just stop drinking it.
If you have sugar in your coffee or tea, cut it down from two teaspoons to one, or better still find a natural substitute like honey to take its place.
If you investigate, do your homework, research, you will find that it is a pleasing experience finding a healthier way to live, and to enjoy food as it used to be prepared and consumed in a much healthier way.
