The Police are there to help and protect people, they are employed to be a service to the community. To be on the side of the law as best as one can, is a good thing.
I have read about, known and seen videos of people who were very disrespectful to Police and they only do so because they have not needed the Police before and they have some immature and prideful dislike of authority and police.
I have had clashes with the Police, probably everyone does, and even Police clash with Police. The point is that we are all human, and once we recognize that the Police are a service that helps keep crime down and are who we can call for help, protection, and so on, we can value the Police for the job that they do.
On Security Patrol I have got out of the work vehicle and someone just starts off at me for no reason, yelling, threatening and so on. In Materialistic times there are many adults who are under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or have some childish prideful ego issues and they mouth-off and get nasty “just because”.
Years ago I knew a man who I didn’t tend to get on with, but I was friends with his sister, and he was one day mouthing of loudly in front of his little children about how he hated, “the pigs’.
I got very angry at him.
I told him that he was setting a bad example to his little girls because they may need the police one day (as children or adults) for help and if their father taught them to hate and fear the Police, then who could they call for help.
I said too him that he may have his views, but for his children’s safety he should keep them to himself so that his children can grow up knowing that the Police are there for them, to help, protect and keep them safe should the situation arise.
I was told years later by someone who knew him that he was selling drugs, got a hiding from local gang for selling on their territory, and he was not able to call the police for help due to his illegal activities, and his wife and children saw him beaten up by the criminals.
Maturity and common sense is knowing the value of the Police, and respecting their efforts.
We were told in Security Training to de-escalate a potentially violent situation, and to explain to the upset people who we may be asking to leave a property etc, that it is our job to do what we are doing, and we are following the instructions that the property owner has given us to ask trespassers to leave. Once they realise that we are just doing our job, we become human like them, and 99 percent of the time they leave peacefully.
The point here, is that the Police have a job to do, and as soon as we understand that what they are doing is what they are being paid to do, and that like the rest of us in the world they want to get home safely to their families as much as the rest of us do, we can see them as the same as us.
If you or someone in your family has had a clash with a Policeman or Policewoman, then you may decide to hold a grudge against all the police, but that is irrational, because you do not know if one day you will need the Police to help you and your family.
Like religious people, teachers, and people in all jobs, we can clash with people over misunderstandings, pride, egos being hurt, and so on. Also in all forms of employment there are bad sorts, its a part of life.
Good parenting is teaching our children who the Police are, what their job is, and that they are there to help us. In another part of Life Teaching we parents can explain that we will not always get on with everyone in the world, but to try as best as we can.
Another point is, that we can come in to contact with the Police and they may seem stressed, pushy or upset, and as citizens we should understand that we have no idea where these Police just came from.
It could be that they were just threatened, or that another Police person was hurt, maybe helped a rape victim or dealt with domestic violence, or that they helped at a car accident and had to deal with dead bodies.
Theirs is a harsh job at times, and they also come up against the worst types of people, people who most of the general public never see or clash with (because of the good work of the Police force), and I would recommend that since we don’t know how the day has gone so far for the Police that you are dealing with, be respectful, do as asked, and co-operate as best as you can so that they can do their job.
A wise parents teaches their children to be on the side of the law.
