Effectiveness of Compost Bags/Sacks from the Gardening Centre/Store

I decided to run an experiment a month or o back, to find out just how good bags of compost are. The compost bag I used was Not from the one in the title photo.
The one I got was a cheap one from the local Warehouse Store here in New Zealand. I won’t mention the brand name though.

What I did was dig one part of the garden out by completely removing the dirt and the other half I left with last years old dirt and all I did to it was weed it and turn the dirt over adding no compost.

Image one shows the two plants that I used for the experiment.
They were both seedlings when planted, and they were both planted at the same time, the one in the old soil is smaller in size than the plant in the compost soil from the compost bag.
The Plant on the Left is the bigger plant and the smaller plant is on the right, these are closeup photos so they look much the same. You can see though that the bigger plant on the left has bigger leaves, more leaves and of better colouring. They are the same kind of plant.

The measurements across on the big plant is 660 mm, and 360 on the smaller plant.

I do hope that you found this experiment informative. It does show that good soil makes a big difference and is much healthier for the plant.

But something to be aware of regarding Compost that you buy.
When you get compost and compost bags from somewhere other than your own gardens they have their own weed seeds in them. So if a strange flower, plant, weed appears in the dirt and you know not where it came from, it probably came from some compost you bought and put in your gardens.
