Keep a Pocket Flap Open

If you have a need to keep the flap at the top of your pocket open this is easily done with Velcro Strips.

On security Patrol I have to reach into the pocket for our Door tags which we leave at each site we check. I have some new shorts with stiff material, it is thick and when I reach into the pocket to get the tags the thick flap gets in the way.

I need to keep the flap for when it rains to keep the rain out of my pocket and wetting all the tags making them useless.

When you buy Velcro Strips they are of two parts, the hook side and the part that attaches to that.
The Velcro Strips I got were sticky on the back. So I cut them to size for the top of the pocket and above the Pocket.

I peeled off the sticky protector and then stuck the Velcro piece (with the protective strip peeled off) to the top of the Flap and then stuck the other part of the Velcro on that and then when I raised the flap the other piece of Velcro stuck in the correct position on the leg of the pants.

Once my Velcro Strips were in place I sewed them into place with my sewing machine, but this could just as easily be done with hand-sewing.

Left: This is the pocket with the flap up and the Velcro can’t be seen because it is behind the flap holding it in place allowing the user of the pocket to easily put their hand into the pocket and remove it.

I tried this last weekend on Security Patrol and it works perfectly.

If it rains the flap can be lowered to protect the pocket from rain.
