Helping People grow!

Dinner Table Layout & Manners Suggestions

My mother had no interest whatsoever of teaching us children dinner table manners and often we ate dinner in front of the TV not at the Kitchen table. When I ate at friends homes I was completely at a loss about how other people ate and found myself to be completely put out, confused and embarrassed.

I have no idea how my sisters got through this, but when I ate at someone’s house I would wait and watch and see what they did before I ate. If they prayed I had no idea what they were doing or how to do it.

I had no idea which hand used the knife for cutting food, or the fork, or the other manners at the table, and mostly I would eat slow and not talk at the table for fear of making a complete fool of myself and embarrassing the family that I was eating with.

I realize that these days there are many children who have now grown up the same way so I present to them a few tips and some idea’s on the subject.

Even to this day I do not enjoy eating with other people and prefer to eat alone, probably from bad childhood experiences eating at other people’s homes or embarrassing myself.
The only people I have ever been comfortable eating with was my sisters or my children. I do try to get things right eating with other people but probably 90% of the time I find some excuse to avoid eating out with other people and stay at home instead.

Be aware that no matter how well dressed and presentable a person may seem they may have very little tact, imagination and little idea about being polite.
I was once at the dentist, in the dentist chair, and the dental assistant came in to tell the dentist that his next customer was in the waiting room shoving down a meat pie and that the dentist was going to have to clean all the minced meat out of her mouth before he could work on her teeth. Naturally he was shocked and amazed at this well dressed working woman’s lack of tact and inability to see how she was making his job harder/grosser.

So please do be aware that from time to time you will eat out with someone like that woman, and you will be put-out by that other person’s lack of manners and lack of tact.

If you help set the table you can ask the host where you will be sitting and possibly ask to sit elsewhere if you want. If you do this privately with the host then no one is offended or upset and you get to sit with people who you want to sit with.

Even at a restaurant I organize my plates after the meal is eaten, and put my food in the plate and so on to help the staff out.

Always take extra money to a restaurant even if you know that you won’t need it.  I once, as a teenager and thankfully was working, was invited to dinner at a restaurant with my girlfriend all paid for by her father for her birthday. After the dinner I was approached by staff and they had to apologize and tell me that we had eaten food that cost more (her father said that we could eat as much as we wanted) than the amount the father had given them for the meal, and they had to ask me to make up the difference which I happily did.
But it would have been more embarrassing if I had not brought my wallet with money in it to the restaurant.

There is no harm in being prepared, don’t take things for granted, life does not always work out as we expect it to.

Some Tips and Ideas.

You shouldn’t put your elbows on the inner table.
It is polite to keep your elbows tucked in so as to not bump the person who is sitting next to you on either side. They should do the same for you.
Make sure that you are presentable when you sit down to eat with a clean face and clean hands.
Watch everyone else, when they start eating you can.
Make sure that everyone is at the table seated before you eat.
• Even if very hungry please don’t gulp down the food, take your time – chew your food slowly, swallow quietly.
• Please, no crude or distasteful conversation at the dinner table. Even if others do this, show that you are polite, respectful and have style by not following distasteful behavior at the dinner table.
Please always be aware of where the drinks, plates and so on are so as to not bump anything or tip over the person next to you drinks.
Always be polite and say, “Thank you!” and “Please?” like, “Can you please pass the salt?”
It is impolite and possibly disastrous to stand up and reach across the table to get the salt, pepper and so on. It is better to ask someone to pass what you want to you, then nothing gets knocked over.
Keep your feet tucked in under you so as not to bump or touch other people’s feet.”
Please don’t put other objects on the table while eating with others, or eating out, such as books, bags, toys, and so on.
When eating with friends or special occasions turn your cell phone off or notify anyone likely to call or text that you will be having dinner with so-and-so’s family and you are not available for that time.
Eat with your mouth closed. If you have food in your mouth please swallow before you speak or else food may come out onto the table and you may make people at the table feel unwell viewing the mushed contents of your mouth.
Don’t use your fingers when eating. For some cultures and people this is acceptable, so you may want to observe what the family or people who you are eating with do.
• It is good manners to ask to be excused from the table.
If you are given a napkin or there is one on the table use it. If you are unsure watch what the other people at the table do, see how they fold the napkin and whether they put it on their lap or tuck it in at their neck etc.
It is polite to not lower your head to the food, rather one should take the food all the way to the mouth.
• Please don’t making eating noises loudly or the likes of slurping noises.
Chat politely. I have known of families who do not talk until the food is eaten in the plates and everyone is finished eating, so please be aware that other families may do things differently than you, so do please be respectful of their rules.
Please don’t check your phone or other devices at the dinner table while eating.
• Please don’t smoke at the dinner table.
Please don’t lean your chair back or unbalance it.
Please don’t take food off other people’s plates.
It is impolite to wave your food utensils around, especially if they have food on them because the food can come off and land in another plate or on the table.
Please keep your personal issues with anyone at the table to yourself, you can deal with that sort of thing elsewhere at another time.
Please keep the conversation light. Don’t bring up personal issues, sex life, relationship issues, work problems, legal issues and so on.
If you need to cough, cover your mouth and cough to the side away from the table if you can, or make an apology and leave the table if need be, everyone will understand. Same for uncontrollable sneezing and so on.
Don’t eat too much no matter how much you enjoy the meal. You may feel ill from overeating or from eating something delightful and new that you have not tried before, and then you get sick and that would ruin the meal for everyone. If you are hungry later, get something to eat at home.
It is polite to not ask for seconds and thirds unless you are a regular eater at that home or with these people.
Please don’t take the hosts or guests for granted and expect them to put up with your foolishness or impolite behavior.
Please try not to fidget, tap your knife or fork on  plate or the table, or constantly tap your foot impatiently.
Please don’t put another person “on the spot” by making fun of them, embarrassing that person, shaming them or the hosts, to get a few cheap laughs.
Please don’t try eating something new like an Italian spaghetti dish without knowing how to eat spaghetti.
It is considered rude to interrupt someone telling a  story and then start telling your story. Please wait, let the other person tell everyone what they are saying then have your turn.

When eating in a restaurant please be aware that the menu can hold many germs as many restaurants don’t clean  them often and therefor many people in a day touch them. One of the most common places to get germs are in eating places, public toilets and restaurants.

The doors can also have germs on them from people coming and going from the restaurant all day.
The toilet doors could be in the same condition, use your elbows to push doors open or close them if you can.

Please always stop and think before you make a move.

Enjoy your meal.

All the best from

PS:
Be brave. I have been to some one’s home, been treated rudely and just got up, apologized that I must go and left.
I have also been sat next to someone who I don’t want to sit with, especially when someone is trying to get me into a relationship with a woman, and I move to another seat or eat, go home.

I have very strong deep and firm feelings about what I will put up with by other people.
Sometimes a person can go to an event innocently only to find out that we were being set up or to sooth bad issues with someone (something we are not at that time ready to do), or someone has an agenda.
I do not find it embarrassing or wrong to politely just leave, even half way through a meal.

If the situation is not right for you or does not feel right, or you know that you don’t want to be in a certain situation, then leave.
Be polite, talk to the host privately if you must and even if they try to talk you into staying, if you are not comfortable with staying then leave.
One reason for this strong firm showing of what you want is to send a signal to other of what you will and won’t put up with. You don’t want it to happen again, so your actions will let them know strongly what you won’t allow.
Some people will put us into a situation to make us do something we would normally not do and because they know that we are a nice person, polite, well behaved and maybe a people pleaser they will push it and set up a situation that they believe that we will be too scared to walk out from. I enjoy showing people that they cannot push me around and I enjoy walking away from a trap or people trying to take advantage of me.

If people tell me that the situation is not what I think, but I feel that it is, then I trust my instincts and learn from the experience, for example. who I can trust
