Recently, due to the situation with fuel and Iran, I bought a battery powered lawn mower.
I had my reservations about whether they were any good, but the reviews I read online were most impressive. I have two battery powered chainsaws and they do a wonderful job at cutting wood, trimming tree’s etc.
I saw some 18 volt lawnmowers but I wanted some more power and hoping that a 36v Li-ion lawnmower would be good enough for my lawn that grows fast.
And since I already had Nordic batteries I decided on that mower.
Basically, to keep weight down, everything other than a few things is lightweight plastic. Its easy to lift with the middle handle and carry.
The 2 18 volt batteries sit in the compartment at the front under that transparent cover you can see in Fig 1.
To start the mower is easy. Press a round Start button on the side of the handle, pull the handlebar/switchbar (it has a few names on different lawnmowers) and it starts up. As soon as you let go of the switchbar the electric motor stops – good for safety.
Using the lawnmower is simple, effective and in my opinion fun.
Mine has that feature that when you get into heavy grass the motor speeds up to cope with the heavier load, it does this automatically – the motor seems to run at a smooth speed to save battery life, and then uses more power to deal with the heavy grass. It is very noticeable when the motor speeds up.
If you walk too fast in to a heavy load of grass the motor shuts off and the unit beeps a few times. Because electric motors, especially battery powered electric motors don’t have the power of a petrol lawnmower, you should walk slower than you would with a battery powered lawnmower.
Some YouTube and Internet reviews were rather harsh on some brands, and that is why I was a bit weary of buying a battery powered lawnmower. But customer reviews were very positive.
I have used this lawnmower on my back section, which is rather rough, and it cuts the grass easy. The catcher works far better than my petrol lawnmower.
For the heavy grass I used the top height setting, but most of it I mowed on the middle height setting with no problems.
The huge advantage of not using petrol is a big plus. No mixing for two strokes, and no going to get petrol for all fuels.
A disadvantage is making sure that your batteries are charged, but this is not a biggie. I have a double charger so I can charge two batteries at once.
My final thoughts are that cutting grass with a battery powered lawnmower is a good choice if you don’t want to buy petrol at the current prices or in the future, and don’t want the hassle of having to leave home to get the petrol to mow your lawns.
I think this is a very good alternative to using a pertrol lawnmower.
