What I dislike about fame is that unless the person is capable of deflecting all the mass adoration they will be destroyed by it to some degree. Fame also affects famous peoples decisions etc. Being famous can be like living in a cage.
Fame can be good sometimes because it can lead us to good people, Jesus is a perfect example of this.
When people talk about Christianity or God often the talking turns to Jesus.
Very few people are famous and poor in financial wealth. Mostly it is religious people who are humble and turn away from riches because they have discovered that too much of anything causes much strife in our lives. We know that we shouldn’t covet and that gluttony is a bad thing. The aim of the true religious leader is to lead by example, and that example should be of a humble meek person who does not seek fame or popularity, and instead wants to share what they have learned to improve the lives and eternity of others.
A Pastor once talked to me about how he was disappointed that God had not blessed him with fortune. He was comparing himself with the religious leaders of Southern America with their fine houses and large churches, and other preachers that he admired. He wanted a title, fame and money for his work for God, and he was disappointed that God hadn’t given it to him. Our goals in the faith should be humble and our focus on others and not ourselves.
Mother Teresa is a good example of a person choosing to live a humble life while helping others. Famous monks who dedicated their lives to people and not to their own selfish gain stayed humble while also famous. Personally I believe as Martin Luther went on to prove, that a person of the church should be able to marry. I fully support this.
When people flock to see someone that is well known it is hard for the person to stare at such adoration and control their own thoughts of vanity. People, the audience flatter and adore people and by doing that we make them the victim and we are the hunter.
I like to walk the streets and not be noticed. Sometimes friends wave but freedom is being comfortable in our own town or city. We always read of famous people not being able to walk around their home town without being pestered and chased by adoring fans. One story I read was of Chuck Norris and he was to address an audience in a square and the females attacked him and he had to be surrounded by body guards and whisked away to safety. Charles Dickens had a great furry coat that he was proud of an the Americans at functions would tear or pull of a piece of it as a souvenir and the ruined the coat.
I saw the in the movie Shadowlands that C S Lewis, famous for The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe and his famous Christian books was not well known in his home town in England, yet all around the world his works we help in high esteem. He liked it that way.
Fame can be a great danger because it can destroy a person’s personality, their family life, their marriage and future. It takes a humble attitude to not let fame soak into a persons soul and destroy them.
So if a persons name helped bring people to Christ then that is a good thing. Billy Graham tried to stop them using his name in the ministry but his people that worked with him were wise enough to see that people were coming to see and hear Billy Graham and not them, so Billy Graham had to give in and let them use his name for the cause.
To find out how fame affects people is to simply see how they react to becoming well known. If they become arrogant and cash in on their popularity then that will show part of the reason for their work. If a person stays humble and doesn’t bath in their vanity and money then they are truly humble and worth listening to.
Humble loving people give, give and keep on giving. There concern is not what they can gain from the masses, but what it is that they can give to the masses.
All the best from James M Sandbrook.
