Pride

Many people, or most people, use pride to hold them back from things that they could or should do, especially when it comes to helping people. In fact one of the reasons why people don’t help people is that they may feel “better than the person in need” therefore they see this as a logical and reasonable reason why they should not help people.

One of the popular ones I heard growing up is that people see other people’s struggles, bad lot that he or she is in, or struggles in life as “something he or she deserves” and helping that person is a waste of time.

As long as a person feels that he or she is better than someone, or that they have a (what seems like a) logical reason why they shouldn’t help someone, then they won’t help that person and they will have a clear conscience.

For example, a person without a job, house or car, starts to live in a street, sleeping outside, sitting in the rain, with no where to go, what do the people of the street do? They call some authority to remove that person.

Empathy is wondering why he or she became poor, what that persons past was, how he or she became so “damaged” that this person has no goals, no desires, what seems like no desire to live, and then helping that person.

I have a story of a woman who prayed in the morning and got a very strong desire to take a hair brush with her on a plane trip and that she should brush someone’s hair – she thought that the idea was silly, but she took the brush with her anyway. On the plane a man was wheeled in on a wheelchair, his hair a mess, and tears streaming down his face, while some government employee was pushing the wheelchair, doing his job.

The woman, feeling very embarrassed asked the man if she could brush his messy hair, and in tears he said yes. He explained that he was going to see family and he wanted to look neat and tidy but the people taking him there wouldn’t let him brush his hair. The trip was very emotional and important to him.

Another story I have is where a man sells flowers at airports and he had the thought to give some flowers to a woman he had never met before and to wrap them in a certain way. So that morning he did wrap those flowers that way. While he was selling the flowers a woman went passed and he gave her the flowers for free, and she saw them and burst into tears. She told him that it was her weeding anniversary and her husband had died a year ago and the flowers and bow were exactly what he would give her on their anniversary every year. This man was very embarrassed handing flowers to a stranger, especially a woman, but he did this anyway.

Part of the reason that the world today is so cold, and we all complain about the world being this way, is because we make excuses for our apathy, lack of love, lack of care, and selfishness.

Humankind honours and respects people who are wealthy who hoard money in banks and material gain, rather than help the poor and needy. To them, to the public, people who do not hoard money and who are not like them are unworthy, unneeded and they wish they were out of sight and out of mind.

But humankind cannot see that the problem is them being prideful and selfish, and until we see ourselves for who we really are and how we think, especially what is toxic, selfish, and blame-shifting, the world will never get better.

One way of looking at this is, take all the people off the planet and it becomes healthy again, the animals are happy, all is healthy and good. Place good decent caring people on the planet and the way we live today disappears and we live in harmony with the animals and nature.

The problem for all our suffering is ourselves our thinking, our toxic beliefs and lack of love and empathy, we refuse to try to understand each other, rather we judge others and then put ourselves above them in our own minds, and when they hit on hard times we ignore them and which that they would just go away.

I remember being told about a young woman who was very sad about a family’s situation, and she has wealthy parents, but she was too ashamed to help the people she felt deeply sorry for. So she would beg her parents to help them, or beg her parents friends to help them, but never lower her self publicly to do it herself because she was too proud and ashamed of the suffering family. When her parents refused to help the family in need, the daughter would cry pitifully, but do nothing for them.

We should not expect other people to do what we should be doing.

You see, love is an action word. Crying feeds no one, helps no one achieves nothing. Love means trying to understand, trying to help, and actually helping.
