Stop Flogging A Dead Horse

The title means the horse is dead, you can’t get it to get up no matter what you do, no matter how much you try, and for no matter how much time and effort into it, the horse will never get up on its own ever again, its dead.

On the side of the road, you see a cart with a dead horse that used to pull the cart, now lying down in front of the cart, and the owner of the horse and cart hitting the horse with reigns or stick trying to get the horse back up to pull the cart again.

You go over and tell the owner of the horse that no matter how hard he or she whips the horse it will never get up again, its over.

To you it being over is obvious, but not so much for someone who is desperate and wants a certain result, like the horse to get up because he or she cannot afford a new horse, so in frustration, desperation, and effort, the owner tries even though deep down inside this person knows that it is over, the effort is a complete waste of time.

Its time to try something else now.

The same can be said for things we try in life. Once its dead its over, so stop trying, because no matter how hard you try, no matter how much suffering you go through, or the time and effort you put into the job, project, trial, it will never bear fruit neither will it ever grow, its over.

Someone tries to revive a hopeless project that has failed over and over again, clearly it will never work, but sometimes it is not that clear to the person involved that it will never work, so we must become aware that it is over, done.

Trying to force a change that cannot happen is a pointless effort and waste of time. A good example of this is being on a committee and trying to convince the other committee members that a certain idea is a good idea, but as they are committed to not accepting your idea it is time to move on somewhere else. In fact this is how many companies have been started in the past. Someone has a brilliant idea, he or she puts it forward, and the top level of management refuse to listen to the person trying to get across to them the benefits of the idea, or they simply refuse an idea from that person, so you keep trying year after year, until finally you have had enough, leave, start a new company and become a big success.

Finally the person with the idea realizes that he or she wasted many years with people who were never going to ever help or listen.

The decision-makers in the company were dead to the idea from the beginning, and no amount of trying to convince them to change their minds would ever do. So before your idea is dead for you as well, go do it yourself.

We humans sometimes waste many years believing in people who don’t believe in who we are and what we stand for and believe in, but due to loyalty and faith in them we keep trying, to one day finally realising that they don’t feel the same way about us as we did about them.

It also describes endlessly talking about a topic or decision that was already fully discussed and finalized by those who feel that they are the power and are in charge. You can talk until you are blue in the face with exhaustion and tears, they will not listen, they don’t want to listen and they will obviously never change their minds to thinking as you do, so stop flogging a dead horse
