Back in the 1970s and 1980s and probably earlier there were many clubs here. I remember at Tainui School they had an Electronics club and children and teenagers interested in electronics on Saturdays for a few hours, would take their tape decks or what have you and the adult electronics repair man or someone who volunteered would come in and help the children while teaching them by experience. There were other clubs, sewing and so on as well. Children and teenagers got valuable experience in activities and hobbies that they were interested in.
