Dr Jones galloped into camp and everyone rose to see what the fuss was all about. Dr Jones was waving a piece of paper in his hand, "Its the will" he cried out loud, "I've got it"!
"Great news, was it in the box" said an excited Jake Worthington.
"No it wasn't, it was in a big old Bible that was in the bookshelf", said a happy Dr Jones.
Jake said "Dads old Bible, he read it daily, it was his favourite book" shaking his head he said "Why didn't I think of looking in it". "Its obvious, when you think about it, Dad put the Will in the Bible because he new that Dirk would never find it there, Dirk never read the Bible, it wasn't his style, he believed in himself and not God. Dad was hoping one of us would find the Will".
Dr Jones got off his horse and passed the Will to Ben who sat on a fallen log to read its contents, Mary and Jake sat down on either side of him and they all started reading together.
"Well that's it then", said a happy Dr Jones "we have to go to town and tell the sheriff that we have the Will. The good news is that this will is dated just four days before Mr Worthington died, and Dirk is not even mentioned in it at all. That boy must have broken Mr Worthington's heart when Dirk decided not to tell him where you twins were".
They all saddled their horses and got ready to go. Mary put on her backpack, she took it everywhere that she went.
"Let's go get us our ranch back" said Ben and Mary!
They all headed to town with the utmost urgency, it was time for Dirk to get his comeuppance.
They burst into the sheriffs office and found the deputy laying back in his chair with his feet on the table, asleep. Ben demanded that the deputy, get the sheriff immediately.
"He is at the back doing some paperwork, I'll go fetch him" he said, displeased because they had woken him up from his daydream, "Is this about the jailbreak"?
Ben said "No its not about somebody who broke out of jail".
The sheriff was a tall man with a large stomach, he had a firm hard look on his face and a long scar running down his left cheek. When he saw Jake his face broke into a large smile.
He held out his hand and said "Jake Worthington I presume". Jake smiled and shook his hand.
"Yes, but how do you know me, you weren't the sheriff when I lived here"?
The deputy pulled out his pistol from the holster tied around his waist and pointed it at Jake and said "Dirk has a big bounty on you boy, you are worth a lot of money, around two grand last I heard, that's good money".
Jake said "Hold it sheriff, Dirk has the ranch illegally we can prove it, we have the will", he said reaching in his shirt pocket, just give us the chance to prove it".
The sheriff held out his big beefy hand to take the will off Jake "Hand it over Jake" he was still smiling. But his eyes had gone cold.
"Don't give it to him" said Mary who was watching the sheriff carefully, "He's a crook, he is working for Dirk".
Jake hesitated at Mary's comments and the sheriffs smile disappeared into a mean hardened grimace, "Give it here boy or the deputy will drill a hole through you at my command" he demanded.
The sheriff pulled out his gun from its holster changed his tactics, "It doesn't matter, you folk are going to see good old Dirk, my best friend from school, and with you all dead the will doesn't mean nothing" with that he smiled and laughed. "C'mon Dan, get a wagon and handcuffs, Dirk will be mighty pleased with this catch"!
The deputy got a wagon and their captives were bundled inside and sat on wooden seats that run down each side of the wagon, they had their hands handcuffed in front of them. Both the sheriff and the deputy were riding up front, they knew these folks were going nowhere handcuffed in a fast moving wagon.
After the wagon got going Mary turned around, she was wearing her magical backpack. She whispered to Ben who was next to her, "Get the file out of the backpack", Ben smiled and when Mary crouched down low and he put his two hands in the backpack and felt around for the file.
It took longer than he thought, he found all sorts of bits and pieces with his fingers and he had to feel each thing and then try to figure out what it was or lift it out to have a quick look at it. Sometimes he picked something up twice which made the task frustrating. Jake and Dr Jones were watching them eagerly hoping that Ben would find the file soon. Finally Ben removed his hands from the backpack with the file clenched between his fingers. Immediately he set to work trying to balance the small file between his fingers and trying to file the small chain that separated the steel clamps on his handcuffs.
Then he had a better idea and he said to Mary, hold your hands out in front of me and when she did this he held the file with both of his fists and started to file the small chain on Mary's handcuffs. It worked and in a while the chain broke.
Mary then grabbed the file and started to cut Ben's chain, just when she finished and they saw the small chain break the sheriff yelled, "Nearly there, its time that you twins met your big brother" he laughed at his own wittiness.
Dr Jones said "Run, jump out and run, there is no time to cut our hand cuffs".
Both the twins said "Goodbye" and jumped out of the back of the moving wagon.
A few minutes later Jake and Dr Jones saw that they were going up the long driveway to the Worthington ranch, there was no time to escape now.
Soon the wagon stopped and a voice said "Okay out you get"!
Dr Jones and Jake stood up uneasily and walked to the back of the wagon, to see the shocked look on the face of the sheriff and his deputy. "What the..." said the deputy.
"Where are they, where are the children"? demanded the sheriff.
Jake and Dr Jones just smiled.
