"I'll go have a look at her after breakfast Mr Tucker" said Ben.
The Tucker twins were told at a young age that they were left on the doorstep in a box, Mr and Mrs Tucker did not believe in misleading the children. Jed and Jenny Tucker were hard working, honest people and they treated their children as friends and family.
"Thanks Ben" replied Mr Tucker.
"What's for breakfast Sis"? said Ben.
"Bacon and eggs - yuck" said Mary who had made it clear that she would not eat eggs not matter what, as long as eggs were in a meal.
"Mmmm, that smells good" said Ben and Mr Tucker together, they were hungry and after washing up they sat down at the table keen to dig into a hearty breakfast.
Mary said Grace and they all started eating.
"Mary what's that you are eating"? said Mr Tucker.
"Carrot sticks and lettuce, tomato sandwiches" said Mary with her nose pointed up in the air and reaching for the glass jug of fresh orange juice.
Ben laughed while putting some blueberry jam on a piece of hot toast, "Since you have to fry the eggs you may as well eat them"! He took a big bite of his toast and gave Mary a big goofy grin.
"Do you know what an egg is Ben Tucker" demanded Mary raising her voice and defiantly biting a carrot stick. Crunch!
"Okay you two, that's enough" said Mrs Tucker smiling, "Settle down and eat your breakfast".
They both ate their breakfast without anymore fuss, they both respected Mrs Tucker and when she gave orders they listened, they new she had their best interests at heart.
The general chatter continued while they finished their breakfast and then Ben and Mary set out to do chores around the farm.
"Mary and I will go see that cow now Mr Tucker and then we'll let you know what we find".
"Okay Ben, lets hope the news is good" said Mr Tucker in a voice that showed that he was a little worried about the cow and what Ben and Mary would find.
While the twins were out looking at the cow an old man came to visit, he is an old friend of the Tuckers and he tells Jed and Jenny Tucker that he knows the children's real family.
The Tuckers don't want to talk about this and they try to avoid the subject but the old man persists that the children will have to go back to their "real" family.
"John Wilkens, lets talk about something like those cattle you brought last week, I heard that you got them at a real discount" said Mrs Tucker in a desperate attempt to change the subject.
"You will have to send them back or else Dirk or the sheriff will come looking for them, Jed" John said "Dirk is a mean lad and you know that he always gets what he wants".
"You know as well as I do John, that both of their parents are dead only the children are left so what's the point" said Mr Tucker hoping that this weak excuse would help the situation.
"John, Jed and I heard the story about Ben and Mary's parents a while ago now, why come here and bring it up now and after so many years, the twins are happy here and we are happy having them, we love them" said a tearful Mrs Tucker.
"The older brother Dirk is looking for them and he wants them back" said John "And I came here to warn you both, Dirk is dead keen on having them back", "Maybe Dirk is lonely especially since Jake left".
"How could a mean spirited person like Dirk ever be lonely, that boy isn't nice to anyone" said Mr Tucker, "The twins are better off with us and you know it John, heck everyone knows it".
"It was such a sad story about their mother and how she died" interrupted Mrs Tucker, "Their poor father suffering like that", "It just breaks my heart thinking about it all".
Ben and Mary were walking around the side of the house when they stopped at the open kitchen window and they heard the old man say "Send them back Tucker, to their rightful family".
"I can't, you know about the things that family has done and the way they would treat the twins".
"They will have to come and take them off me John, because I am not giving up those two children without a fight" said a defiant Mr Tucker, "I will sell the farm if I have to". Mrs Tucker nodded her head in agreement "Its true John we will sell everything to pay for the court costs to keep those children".
That was enough for the children hear and they sadly walked to and old oak tree to talk about the situation and wait for the man to leave.
"Well I had better go" said John, "But you have been warned, Dirk won't be put off, you know that as well as I do and he has the law on his side, for once".
Mary and Ben enter the kitchen after John Wilkens leaves and they ask what's wrong when they see Mrs Tucker crying. "Nothing is wrong dears", "Go outside and play while I talk to Mr Tucker". But Mary is not put off that easily, Ben often called her Hot Head Mary because she could be a bit hot tempered when it suited her.
