"I don't care, put them in the basement, now!" barked an irritated Dirk who's head was whirling with pain and confusion.

Dirk looked at the sheriff and yelled "Well what are you looking at, get back to town!"

The sheriff had a look of disappointment on his face, he was wanting the reward money for Jake but he knew now that he wasn't going to get it because he had displeased Dirk by letting Jake kick him. He didn't like Dirk being unhappy with him and he involuntarily shuddered when he remembered what happened to the last sheriff.

After Dirk cleaned up he came across Sheza and snapped "You will have to cook tonight, the new cook was working for my brother Jake."

Sheza glared at him, "I thought you knew how to hire good staff. I hate cooking. Damn it Dirk, I am not your house slave!"

Dirk turned around with a dangerous look on his face and he demanded "I expect my dinner cooked and on time, make sure I get it." and with that he stormed to the stairway that led to the basement.

The twins sat on a rock and Mary was filing away at one of Ben's metal bracelets from his handcuffs. Ben had previously cut hers away and she was just finishing cutting Ben's second handcuff bracelet away.

"Yay, it's done," said Mary as it broke away.

"Thank goodness for that," said Ben, "Its a nice feeling to be free again."

"I hope Dr Jones and Jake are all right," Mary said in a worried voice, "What are we going to do Ben? We can't just leave them there in the hands of Dirk and his thugs."

"We had better pay brother Dirk a visit. We will go tonight, I am not sure what we will do but we have to do something".

"We could get the Marshal instead," suggested Mary, trying to be helpful.

"The Marshal is many miles away. By the time we all got back Jake and Dr Jones would be dead and gone, and Dirk would have covered his tracks by then. We can't risk it, we have to go in ourselves if we want to see Dr Jones and Jake alive again." Ben was contemplating the situation and all its dangers, but also he knew that they must face them.

When daylight fell Ben and Mary started walking to the ranch, by the time they got there it was dark. Many clouds were about and the moon shone through every now and then through the gaps between the clouds.

"Lets head for the ranch house, they must be in there somewhere," whispered Ben.

They carefully crept through the farm paddocks until they reached the land surrounding the large house. Ben and Mary gazed at the big house in the moonlight, they had never seen anything like it close up.

"There are two thugs on either side of the house, and one at the front door. Lets look around the back," whispered Ben.

"Okay" Mary nodded in agreement.

Another half hour went by while Ben and Mary crept around the house section, finally they reached the back and they climbed the fence behind the huge old barn. They crept down the left side of the barn until they came to the front and Ben signalled Mary to follow him to the barn doors. Ben found the handle and turned it, then he opened the door and they stepped inside. It was dark, damp and gloomy inside the barn.

They stood in the dark and Ben opened the door a bit and looked outside at the house. He was searching for an open window. He saw no guards. He decided to step out and have a closer look when two guards came walking around the side of the house chatting quietly. Ben jumped and quickly closed the door. "Whew," he said.

Mary whispered "What is it, what did you see?"

"Two guards just came around the side of the house," he exclaimed quietly.

They waited for the guards to come around again and then they timed them.

"About every ten minutes they come around," said Ben.

"So that means we have ten minutes to get into the house" said Mary.

"Sure does, they have just left so lets go."
